In the rugged mountains south of the Seven Devils, volunteers will pack into a base camp in the Six Lakes Basin for a week of trail maintenance. We’ll work on trails from our camp which make up several loop options for backpackers to access the Hells Canyon Wilderness. Some of these trails have not seen maintenance for several years.

Trail: Horse Pasture Trail #173, Six Lakes Basin Trail #218, Casey Mountain Trail #216

Deep Creek Trailhead
From Council, Idaho, leave Highway 95 in the downtown area, and head north/northwest on the Hornet Creek Rd #002. Continue north on this road past Lafferty campground until you reach the community of Bear (no services). The road is paved to the community of Bear. After you pass Bear, continue traveling north on Road 105 which is a graveled road, suitable for passenger vehicles. At the point where the road splits, stay right on # 105, do not enter the Bear work center. At this point, the road degrades somewhat. Continue on # 105 for approximately 1/2 mile to the intersection with Road #112. Road #112 is a primitive road, suitable for one way traffic only in many areas. Deep Creek Trailhead is located approximately 2.5 miles North East of Smith Mountain Lookout. Deep Creek Trailhead accesses Deep Creek Trail #214 and Horse Pasture Basin #173. This is the preferred Trailhead for stock users for access to the southern end of the Hells Canyon Wilderness Area.
